We here at SnapCulture are pretty damn psyched about this NBA Draft. First, there's the controversy over who's number 1...Oden or Durant. I strongly think that Durant will be the better player over his career. Some of Oden's health issues are concerns, and who knows how good Oden can be when healthy, no one's seen it. Durant, on the other hand, was absolutely dominant in his Freshman year at Texas, scoring over 20 points thirty times. That said, a lot of the Oden-bashing is ridiculous, and Portland could be really good next year if they can find a way to keep Zach Randolph happy.

But the big question to me (and Will) is what the Bulls are going to do with that #9 pick. Take Joakim Noah? Yi Jianlian? Trade it for KG/Marion/Kobe/Randolph? Personally, I think that John Paxson perceives himself to be a far better evaluator of young talent than all the other GMs, so I think he sits pat and drafts Noah, who slips to them.

NBADraft.net has the Bulls taking Julian Wright, from Kansas. Chad Ford/Bill Simmons take Noah at #9, a scenario I like. Ford (by himself) has the Bulls taking Spencer Hawes, the big white dude from Washington.Chris Ekstrand from SI sees the Bulls taking Yi. No one can agree on this...so what do you think, commenters? ben

  1. Blogger William: When you consider that Noah was talked about as a #1 when people thought he might come out last year, getting him at #9 could be good. He also is a pretty mature player who does a lot of little things, though I sort of see him as a baby Ben Wallace who will never be a big scorer. Though he will be better at getting garbage baskets rather than just kicking the ball back out.

Oden vs. Durant.... Oden is either Dwight Howard or Olowakandi. It all comes down to how much of a risk you want to take.

  2. Blogger ben: Well, I nailed it, didn't I? Not that it was that hard of a guess, but I didn't think Noah would fall to #9. That said, the kid can't shoot. The Bulls need scorers! 7/02/2007

If you haven't seen "Flight of the Conchords" yet, you should. Above is my favorite song from the pilot, and each time I watch it, a new line slays me.

That title has a nice ring to it...so who is it? David Stern? MJ? Phil Knight? Granville Waiters? No, no, no. According to a new article in GQ, it's William Wesley, known simply as Wes, who is the behind-the-scenes master of all things basketball. He's in good with MJ, Lebron, Nike, Reebok, the high school and AAU camps, college coaches, and all the way up to the top. I highly recommend dealing with the click-throughs and reading the whole damn thing.

I've been following the story of Wes since I found out about him on TrueHoop, which I've been reading since before it was cool. Henry Abbott interviews the author of the GQ piece, and has an entire thread dedicated to the sport of figuring out what, exactly, William Wesley does.

Also, don't confuse Mr. Wesley with Wesley Willis or Wes Mantooth. Finally, in other news, this is the 1000th post to snapculture. Hooray for round numbers!

  1. Blogger William: This is not a big deal. When I was growing up, we had a pop-a-shot in the basement. 30 second round, 2 points in the first 20 seconds, 3 points in the last 10. If you got to 30 points in 30 seconds, you'd get a 15 second bonus round of 3-pointers. The first time my dad and I played head-to-head, we got something like 20 to 18. When we decided to try it solo, we found the bonus round after a few tries and got up to 40 points or so. But then after a few weeks we had the moment (like a caveman discovering the wheel) where we figured out how to maximize our shots by using a rapid-fire technique. First time got us up to about 60 points. By the time we maxed out our abilities, we'd topped 120. All I'm saying is that if you gave me a day (and limitless quarters), I could match that kid. 6/21/2007

  3. Blogger ben: Are you serious? It's Carlos Zambrano, talking on his cell phone, wearing a suit, and wheeling what appears to be a Louis Vuitton suitcase across the INFIELD of a baseball stadium. Why is he walking across the field to get to the away team's clubhouse? Why is he wheeling his stuff in a $3000 suitcase instead of having them lugged around by some kid in his bat-bag? The wheels can't be working very well on the infield dirt.

Also, this was just a day after he beat up his own catcher so badly that he went to the hospital. The Z-Man looks awfully dapper for a guy who kicked the crap out of his own teammate.

On Saturday, Joey Chestnut broke Kobayashi's hot dog eating world record, as he took down 59 hot dogs in twelve minutes. For his troubles, he gets a year's supply of hot dogs, which is definitely less than 59 for me.

All eyes are now looking to Wednesday, July 4th, as the two titans of the competitive eating world face off at Nathan's on Coney Island. It's going to be like the Rumble in the Jungle, only with rumbling happening elsewhere. Why not celebrate the goofy mid-week holiday by tuning in to ESPN at 12:40 pm to watch the festivities? ben
