How would this make you feel, Ben? William

  1. Blogger ben: before this offseason i would have welcomed the change, but now it seems like the cubs are willing to spend a few bucks to make a run at the Central, so I'm fine with current ownership. That said, the Tribune company makes so much money off of showing the games on WGN that it would be interesting to see what an actual market rate would be for those...they always underpay the cubs for the rights because it's just shuffling money between Tribune accounts. 3/02/2007

by short people dunking. Simple as that. I want to see the best dunks, period. If you ask me, 'Nique got hosed in '86 against Spud Webb. Watch the highlights here. And then this year, Nate Robinson comes along and steals a spot in the finals from Dwight Howard. We missed out seeing these incredible dunks (see the second YouTube embed). For shame, celebrity judges, for shame.

I think they should have a special "under 6 feet" category, let them have a dunk-off on their own. Throwing in little guys adds the gimmick factor and throws everyone else off. ben

It's crap like this that makes you realize that you were never that good at anything:

Beating Super Mario Brothers in 5 minutes

Beating Super Mario Brothers 2 in 10 minutes.

Beating Super Mario Brothers 3 in 11 minutes.

It's hard to tell if they're fake (you can use an emulator to slow down video game time and perfect things, then speed it back up to real time) or not, but either way they are amazing to watch. There are a ton of other "speed demos" online at the Speed Demos Archive, and Wikipedia has a detailed entry on the speedrun phenomenon. ben

Alright, maybe he's not, but his new ice cream is, with fudge-covered chunks of waffle cone. I keep waiting for the time when his shtick grows tiresome, but I'm not there yet...and I probably won't be until after 2008... ben

What television personality compared his show to a sunset, saying, "It's comforting to know that it's there...You might not go out and see it everyday, but it's nice to know it's happening."

Yep, a sunset. Amazingly enough, it is number one in the Nielsen syndication ratings. ben

The Onion's AV Club's Nathan Rabin is one of my favorite culture critics. This year he's ambitiously trying to write two blog-posts a week about Films that Flopped, and their redeeming qualities. I'm hoping they'll set up a page that has links to all of them, but the above link has links to his first five film discussions: Elizabethtown, Envy, Ishtar, What a Way to Go, and 1941. The link also has his philosophy on why this is a worthwhile endeavor. Check it out, and let's see if he can keep it up and make "the name “Nathan Rabin” to be synonymous with colossal failure." ben

Alright, it's been nearly a week, so I can finally comment on the superbowl:

dammit.

I did enjoy this story, though...about a photo of a young Rex Grossman (left) sitting on Santa's knee. Though Santa is a girl, playing a euphonium:

The Wizards' Gilbert Arenas challenged his teammate DeShawn Stevenson to a shooting contest for $20,000. Gilbert had to shoot his three-pointers with one hand from the college line, Stevenson shot regular NBA three's. It's a long video (ten minutes), but watch the last minute if you watch nothing else, where Arenas taunts his teammate mercilessly, breakdancing and making snow angels on the court.

I bet this gets discussed soon on Gilbert's blog, which is actually a pretty entertaining read, and has a mention of some other three-point shooting competitions they've had to prepare Gilbert for his appearance in this year's three-point shoot-out. ben

Brett Favre to return for his 17th season. Chalk up two more victories next season for the Monsters of the Midway.

In other news, there's a Superbowl in two days, and I couldn't be more excited. If the Bears end up +2 on turnovers, I think they'll win. Simple as that, they need to take the ball away from the Colts offense more than once (and have one big special teams play) to win it. ben

  1. Blogger ben: and yes, i know the bears lost the season finale against the packers, but remember, Rex Grossman didn't even bother preparing for that meaningless game... 2/02/2007
  2. Blogger William: if sexy rexy had been in that game, it would have been an even bigger win for the pack. pack were thisclose to making the playoffs. i bet they get there next year.

and yes, i am excited about brett coming back. at least he gives me hope... much more so than aaron rodgers.
