Disney is celebrating Mickey's 75th anniversary, but some wonder if the company shouldn't retire the old mouse. Mickey products aren't selling as well as they used to, evidently. Well, as we all know, the best strategy is to make Mickey so uncool it becomes cool again. So take him away for a year, and then start selling "retro" Mickey t-shirts, first to the hipsters, then to the masses. William

There's a semi-bewildering article in the New York Times about Seventeen Magazine. As a formerly faithful reader of Seventeen, I was curious to see what they'd do with the 60-year-old stalwart in the face of new competition from CosmoGirl and TeenPeople. The answer? They'll be working on "wardrobe development" and will add an etiquette column and a column on cooking. There won't be much "pint-sized feminism" but there will be advice on how to be a "well-coiffed young woman." The magazine will be "bracingly retro" and "surprisingly demure." It's disappointing that in order to capture Middle America, the editors seem to have decided to forgo an attempt to honor quirkiness, feminism, individuality, or the other values that help teenage girls survive in an era of alpha females and mean girls. By regressing to wardrobe development, Seventeen seems to be giving up on personality development. Anonymous

Uh-oh. The Chinese national basketball team is getting better and better. And when their 14-year-old phenom point guard Chen Jianghua matures, he and Yao could be a lethal combination at the 2008 Olympics (conveniently enough in Beijing). The New York Times Magazine reports.

How can Democrats make gay marriage into a winning issue in 2004? Make it about marriage, not about homosexuality. Comics arbiter Gene Weingarten writes that uber-Christian Johnny Hart, "B.C." author, might have insulted Islam in a recent strip. Hard to say who's right. Hart is quite evangelical with his strip in general, and it is possible that this strip in particular is against Islam. Quite simply, though, it's not funny on any level and he should be banished from the comics pages at least for his lack of talent, which is exacerbated by his evangelism. William

Law School Culture: As a law school student, I've discovered an entire new world of legal blogs. (Run now, while you still can.) For those intrigued by this strange and slightly odd world, here are some great blogs I've found. Three Years of Hell [to become the devil] is a law student who has an entertainingly skewed perspective on the indoctrination of becoming a lawyer; he's also entertainingly political, though not to my liking! Stay of Execution is the story of a lawyer in a financial practice in Maine. Skip the discussions of bankruptcy and look for the moral qualms and the sailing stories. One of the big ones is, of course, Professor Volokh at UCLA, but I'm not so in to him--I'm much more entertained by this Harvard blog and The Serious Law Student. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention Donnybrook, written by my friend Nick and launched last night. Here's the thing about all of these blogs: in an effort to tell you about what it's like to be a lawyer, they manage to up the mystique of the entire legal profession. Read any of these and tell me if you don't feel slightly nauseated by the sheer levels of legal obsession going on. I'll tell you a secret: it's not that hard. Law school thrives in part on the drama surrounding it--the stories of late nights, awful briefs, opaque torts reading, res judicata, the infamous 1L and The Paper Chase. But cut out the chaff and what you have is a hyperlogical system for writing and arguing about common problems. And that's not that hard. Most of the time. Right?

George Vecsey jumps on the Freddy Adu bandwagon. It's a good place to be these days. I saw him on Letterman last night. He had great poise for a 14-year-old. Freddy was on for only a few minutes, but he joked around with Dave (all good-natured banter, all softball questions, but what do you expect?), and did a very cool trick: balanced a soccer ball on the back of his neck and took his shirt off and put it back on, all without the ball falling off. This kid is talented. [My last Freddy post this week, I promise!] ben

The Harvard Crimson tells us that the city of Cambridge may be the first Massachusetts town to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. This, my friends, is why I love Cambridge. The Crimson's article also has some fairly interesting on-the-ground analysis of the relationship between judges, courts, legislatures, and governors. The Massachusetts decision is in many ways just like Brown v. Board of Education was in 1954--in other words, an enormous social change precipated by the courts towards a not-entirely-approving public. Watching how this plays out in Massachusetts is interesting for its own sake--but it also helps us better understand what happened in the glory days of the Supreme Court. Historical times, people, historical times. Anonymous

In news from Broadway, Ellen Burstyn's one-woman show, The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells all, has closed after one performance. Can I just say that anyone who didn't see this coming clearly hadn't spent any time in the real pop culture world in a long, long time? Regardless of whether it's good or bad, no one woman show (about an old woman, no less) is going to be successful in a big Broadway house. I'm all into those girly shows and even I thought it sounded awful! However, note that Ellen Burstyn is not the only one having trouble on Broadway: Farrah Fawcett's star vehicle, Bobbi Boland, closed while still in previews, before it even opened. Anonymous

Britney Spears has been everywhere in the last two months--the covers of Esquire and Rolling Stone (famously bottomless and topless, respectively), all over MTV (where she's in the zone and out all night, kissing Madonna, and making the video), launching the NFL season, hanging out for surreal photo opportunities with Jessica Lynch and Shoshanna Johnson, crying with Diane Sawyer, and, occasionally, singing. The album almost seems incidental to the juggernaut of press that Britney gets just for existing (press for which Hilary Duff would surely sell her soul.) Britney's often compared to Madonna. But where Madonna was famous for constantly reinventing herself, Britney doesn't seem to be able to invent herself at all. She constantly declares that she's not the Lolita, the sex princess, the Southern good girl, any of the labels people try to put on her--she's just doing her thing, dancing and performing and making people happy! And as a result, there's something alarming about the Britney phenomenon. Strawberry Saroyan tried to figure this out back in 2000, when Britney had--oops!--just done it again, and when we worried about her inflating breasts instead of her alleged coke habit. At the time, I thought she was insane. Now, I think she might be on to something. Britney's public persona allows us to project any of our own issues on to her--so the media can use her as a Lolita gone wrong, the sign of emerging female sexuality, a threat to American values, whatever. The article also reminds us that while the press has gone crazy with Britney's' newly sexual image, her new sexual assertiveness, the fact that she's almost-but-not-quite a woman, people have been saying the same things for at least the last three years. The New York Times has a piece on insanely competitive youth sports. I think they recycle it once every six months. They get some quotes about the kids loving it, about how the increased competition is inevitable, citing youth athletics programs from abroad and whatnot. Gimme a break. If you didn't want your kid to play 80-game travelling team seasons, you could sign him up for something else. It's called "voting with your feet". And what ever happened to SCHOOL? LEARNING? Yes, playing on a sports team supposedly builds amorphous crap like "leadership skills" and "teamwork", but you don't need to have six-year-olds running sprints to build "leadership skills". And what about enriching children's lives with more valuable things like, oh, I don't know, "reading" and "math"?

I also think it's amusing how the parents and schools fight fire with fire. "Oh yeah, you want my kid to play soccer year round? Well, then the baseball team is going to start it's OWN soccer team!" "These kids are taking one sport too seriously? Fine, we'll make them play TWO sports!" Way to solve the problem, parents and administrators. ben

Paul Krugman gets it right in this NY Review of Books book review of books. His basic argument is that hypocrisy is the name of the game in the Bush Administration:

Is a conservative politician a reliable friend of the privileged and well-connected? Never mind, let's talk about his sterling family life. Is a liberal politician spectacularly successful in his conduct of economic policy? But he had an affair!
And as always, Krugman knocks it out of the park. ben

Turning it over to me for sports and weather,

Two quick sports thoughts:
1) The Big East is going to be amazing starting in 2005. Already one of the top basketball conferences (Syracuse, Connecticut, St. John's, Georgetown, the list goes on), they are adding perennial tourney qualifiers Cincinatti, Louisville, and Marquette, along with solid DePaul and up-and-coming University of South Florida (you think I'm kidding). Importantly, this will give other Big East teams a shot to recruit in Chicago, Louisville, and other parts of the midwest where they might have had a tough time wooing and visiting players during the season. Now a trip to ML King, Peoria Manual, or some Louisville high school won't be so far out of the way. I expect this move to crowd out some very good mid-major teams, as the NCAA tournament committee will have to look 8, 9, or 10 deep in the Big East alone.

2) Andy Roddick is getting his own reality show. It should be fun to watch, provided it isn't just "Tuesday I played Rainer Shuettler in Dubai", he stays healthy (who wants to watch a show about rehabbing tennis elbow?) and he can keep Mandy Moore involved. She's easy on the eyes, and if she's anything like Jessica Simpson, then this show will have it all. Let's hope he doesn't screw up that relationship before next summer. ben
