Put down the coffee drink, fattie. The Boston Globe investigates the hidden calories in sweet summertime drinks. Biggest eye-opener / belt-unbuckler: The Strawberries and Creme frappuccino has 780 calories. Yes, you read that correctly. A grande caramel frappuccino has 430 calories and 10 grams of saturated fat. Experts suggest to cut these drinks out of your diet, but if you "just can't", try them without the whipped cream and substitute skim for whole milk. 780 calories, yikes! ben

Details of Michael Jordan's trip to China from ESPN the magazine. Great stuff on people waiting all day, standing 10-people deep along a street to see his airness. When I was in China in the early nineties the few t.v. channels there were aired reruns of NBA playoff games all the time. No surprise that there would be this much anticipation in his arrival, they've been following his career since the beginning. ben

Everyone's writing about Haaavaad today:

The NYT on Harvard and their expanding African American student body.

The Post with their annual Larry Summers isn't your father's Harvard University President article. ben

Will is on assignment in Turkey, so I'm doing his posts for him today. Looks like he's been reading the Post. Links are his, words are mine:

1) Let the backtracking and foot-in-mouthing begin as the press realizes that a handful of representatives and senators attended a bizarre reception for The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who considers himself the Messiah, on Capitol Hill in March. Danny Davis, Mark Dayton, and many others went for reasons that are still unclear. Some say the reception was intended to honor others. Republican attendees argue they went to support the Washington Times, being ridiculously ignorant not to know that Rev. Moon owns the Times and would say all kinds of crazy stuff. Either way, this is not good press if you're elected representative was in attendance.

2) Things have gotten ugly in Republican Senate nominee Jack Ryan's campaign after allegations have surfaced accusing him of asking her to perform sexual acts in front of other people. Let's just say that this isn't going to play in Peoria. Dem. Barack Obama has opened up a 20 point lead, and that was BEFORE this news came out. Stick a big fork in Ryan's campaign.

3) The "Sweatshirt Capital of the World," Martinsville, Virginia, lost their minor league baseball team this year. And things ain't what they used to be in southwestern Va. It's gotten so bad there that NASCAR is likely going to remove Martinsville from their racing schedule next year. What are the good citizens going to do about it? Blame NAFTA. ben

Must...come up with...most offensive...joke...

How about: There's nothing full about this former "Full House" star.

No, no wait, how about: Maybe she should have been eating for two.

How about: Mary Kate needs to get on the Lewinsky diet (see below).

Hmm, I'm running out of ideas. Anyone else care to jump on the bandwagon?

Following up on Will's post about 'Airline', here's another company that's seen an increase in sales from a reality show: West Coast Customs, the car shop that pimps rides for MTV's Pimp My Ride has seen a strong upturn in customers from the free advertising in the show.

Uh-oh, Method Man is frustrated with Fox 'taking the ghetto' out of his show by trying to appeal to 'middle America' (read: white people) with 'lame jokes' (read: jokes written by white people). Um, Meth, have you EVER SEEN A SITCOM? The last sitcom that had even a taste of ghetto was the "Fresh Prince" (only at Jazz's crib though), and the only true ghetto sitcom was "Good Times". If you really thought that network execs weren't going to tone down your antics, you were sadly mistaken. Sounds like you need a new batch of Tical. ben

A flight to Rapid City, SD, had a strange ending when the Northwest plane mistakenly landed at nearby Ellsworth AFB instead of at the local airport. Passengers were told to lower their windowshades and weren't given a straight answer for a little while. It took another 3+ hours to get from the AFB to the airport as another pilot crew was called in.

In other airline news, the documentary-style A&E program "Airline," a clever, wonderful show about Southwest Airlines, has spurred a dramatic increase in Southwest job applications. William

I hate to say it, but the handbag business must be bringing in the bacon. Sorry, cheap shot. But what of Monica now that Bill's book is coming out and he says he fooled around with her just because he could? How does that make you feel, hon? Do you want to share? No, not your sandwich... your feelings... William

Sorry about being so remiss snap culture! I promise I'll love you again like I loved you before!

How about this story about a woman who is competing for the U.S. in Athens in synchronized swimming, but who already knows she's going to jail afterward? William

And another thing...why the hell haven't I put The Boondocks on the list of daily reads? It's the best comic around. I'm putting it at the top of the list. Start your day with it. Read it over a bowl of cereal. Try to keep milk from coming out your nose. ben

I figured out my problem with most of the weekend Reagan coverage. The news outlets were busy celebrating Reagan's life, but I was looking for one that celebrated his death. For starters, here's a great piece from The Nation's archives entitled 66 Things to Think About When Flying Into Reagan National Airport.

Then head to Slate for readings on:
How stupid Reagan was, how he wrecked the GOP, and how he misunderstood freedom.

Anyone else have suggestions of good "Ding-dong the witch is dead" kind of reading? ben
